Banks

Mega-banks such as Capital One, U.S. Bank, Wells Fargo, Bank of America, Citigroup, and Chase are principal investors in coal-fired power and/or coal mining operations.[1] If you hold accounts with these banks, you are indirectly funding companies that are increasing greenhouse gas emissions and lobbying Congress to prevent the adoption of green energy legislation.[2] Community development banks and credit unions are excellent alternatives.

Community development banks are just like traditional banks except that part of their mission is to promote economic development in lower-income areas. Some community development banks are also dedicated to a variety of social-environmental causes, such as backing credit card donation programs for progressive nonprofit organizations and lending to green energy enterprises.

Credit unions are member-owned, not-for-profit organizations that provide all of the typical account and loan services you would find at a bank. Since credit unions are not-for-profit, any profit or surplus revenue is distributed among members. Loan rates tend to be lower and savings interest rates tend to be higher at credit unions than at banks. Checking account fees are much lower at credit unions, and customer satisfaction tends to be higher at credit unions than at banks.[3] However, some credit unions are not open to the general public, and credit unions do not necessarily target lending for social or environmental causes.
